This morning, I left my appartement with some brand new sneakers, a V-neck shirt and a french baguette under my arm .... Tout pour que je me confonde parfaitement avec la population ici !

Restaurant Panoramique de la Bastille

Mes plans matinaux qui consistaient à aller me détendre dans un petit bistro pour y siroter un café on été soudainement mis de côté lorsque j'ai décidé d'aller faire un tour à la Bastille; ancienne fortification construite pour y loger les soldats des montagnes. C'est le téléphérique Grenoble-Bastille qui m'a amené jusqu'au site historique ... Jusque là rien de trop forçant ! Je me suis donc retrouvé face à une vue en surplomb imprenable de la ville olympique de 1968. En plus, le restaurant du téléphérique est un bien meilleur endroit pour prendre mon café !

After taking a good look at the city, I continued my hike higher in the mountains. About two kilometers into my hike, I came face to face with the caverns made by the french mountain soldiers ''or blue devils'' 165 years ago to protect the fortress in case of an attack. L'armée française des montagnes à été mise en place au début du 19ieme siècle pour faire façe à la tout nouvelle armé Italienne se spécialisant dans combats en montagnes. 

Ensuite, ce sont les 4 kilomètres d'ascension en souliers chic qui m'ont permis d'atteindre un lieu commémoratif tout à l'honneur de la contribution des soldats sus-mentionnés. Un lieu historique en altitude qui honore les soldats qui défendaient la nation française dans les terrains les plus hostiles ... En traînant avec eux des ânes qui avaient comme devoir de déplacer le matériel. Je partirai peu-être vers les plages à Nice demain;  j'essayerai de profiter de la canicule pour me rafraîchir sur la côte d'azur;)                                                            Ciao...                                                                 Gab

Bonjour,

Depuis mon dernier message, beaucoup de choses se sont déroulées très vite ! Je prend donc ce soir le temps de mettre à jour le site. Une fois définitivement parti d'Oshawa, j'ai eu la chance de passer 3 semaines de vacances avec mes proches; un moment très apprécié avant mon départ vers l'Europe. 

The 22th of July was officialy the date I left home and drove up to Winnipeg where we had to build new football fields for UofManitoba Bisons. I worked 22 days in a row over there and it was tough ! It was really hot and humid in the city and the 15 pounds I lost working over there prove it ... I flew back home on the 13th to get all my stuff ready for my departure to France.

FINALLY LEAVING FOR GRENOBLE !!! The last 6 months during witch I was intensively studing\working\preparing my trip finally paid off ! Mon vol à Paris ainsi que mon TGV vers Lyon étaient tous les deux en retard ce qui a malheureusement fait que j'ai manqué la prise en charge de mon appartement. J'ai donc du coucher dans un hôtel pour ma première soirée. C'est finalement aujourd'hui que je suis entré dan mon appart pour la première fois. Rien de trop chic ... Une douche, une cuisine, un lit et un bureau; tout ce qu'un étudiant a besoin pour survivre. Par contre, les 620 euros que je paye à chaque mois sont d'après moi dus à la vue que j'ai à partir de ma fenêtre. Un vue imprenable sur les alpes dauphinoises. Je vais finaliser mon inscription à l'école de Management demain ! Mais bref, plusieurs choses m'attendent ici en Europe dans la prochaine année; je les partagerai le plus souvent possible.

After installing 175 000 square feet of synthetic grass and eating around 600 sushis, I'm leaving Ontario and heading up to Winnipeg !

Hello all !

Today, we finished the last field of the Civic Center Complex in Oshawa. The complex has three turf fields; an outdoor stadium, a practice field and an indoor field. We worked our asses off over there but the result is great ! Each of them include some mens and womens lacrosse fields, soccer fields and football fields. All the different lines made my job a lot harder as I had to mesure everything up before shaving and gluing the colored lines on the green turf. Mais j'y suis arrivé ! En tout, 2 mois ont été nécessaires pour installer les terrains de FIELDTURF. Seriously, take a look at these fields ... The referees and the players are going to be soooooooo confused when there going to play on there !!! Anyways, we got paid for it, so I'm happy :) La vie au Travelodge à Oshawa commencait à être longue ... Par chance, nous prenions le temps d'aller décompresser dans quelques bons restaurants le soir sans penser au travail que nous avions à faire. 

We didn't get lucky as we got crapy/rainy weather when we had to work outside and beautiful/sunny weather when working inside. Je n'ai donc pas pu profiter du soleil ... Cette semaine, malgré la défaite pitoyable des Canucks dans le 7ième match de la finale de la coupe Stanley, tout c'est super bien passé ! I shaved (with a speepshear) 5 soccer fields and 6 lacrosse fields in 4 days ... I was pretty proud of it ! Its an insane amount of work, we had to work almost 80 hours a week to finish the last project in 10 days. Days were tough and long but the last two of them were really productive as we filled the fake grass with 300 tons of sand and rubber; thats enough material to cover up a two floor house ! 

Anyways, now I'm taking a small break at home and then I'll be driving up to Winnipeg to start some new fields over there. Take a look at what we did ;)

I'll have to work overtime to buy my dream car ! Ferrari Scuderia 430 in Oakville.

We all traveled to Oakville today as we had to do some maintenance work on two fields over there. J'ai été surpris par une ferrari scuderia F430 à mon arrivée au dôme principal ! Et oui ... Le vagabon en arrière à droite (lui qui a l'air prêt à cambrioler la voiture) ... C'est moi.

Also, I went for a 14 miles run on the lake Ontario shores. I wasn't expecting such a nice paysage ! The lake is surrounded by a 30 feet cliff and a nike trail. There is some epic landscapes ! Check it out !

Hello all !

So I've been working on a ''football/soccer/ mens&womens lacrosse'' field in Oshawa,ON near the great lakes. Oshawa is a nice little city with good restaurants, nice people and one of the biggest recipient of taxpayers money, GMC trucks assembly line. Up here, the weather forecast is always wrong and its a real pain in the ass because at this point of the job, we cant work in the rain as the sand and rubber infill wont penetrate the synthetic grass proprely ! La ville est riche en restaurants ... Des endroits assez surprenants en fait ! Moi et Dominic, notre chef de chantier, avons prit plaisir à découvrir quelque uns d'entre eux. Faut ben se gâter ...

Our best findings:

Oshi Maki Sushi Restaurant: Home to the freashest fish I've ever eaten ! For 15$, I was able to eat red tuna, butterfish, salmon, red snapper and crab tartare ... :) 

The Greek Tycoon: Un gigot d'agneau digne des plus grands restaurants pour une vingtaine de dollars ... 

Nice Bistro: Un petit bistro français où j'ai eu la chance de rencontrer les propriétaires, un couple français qui, il y a deçà quelques dizaines d'années, gérait un petit restaurant à côté de celui de mon grand-père à Québec ... Le monde est petit. Best all you can eat mussels and fries ever !

Anyways, the field is almost done. We need about one more day to finish the job and it won't be today as it is illegal to work on victoria day in Ontario ... Kind of absurd but the 2000$ fine if we do work convinced me to stay at the hôtel today. After, we'll be on the road in Ontario as we have a couple of maintenance to do. Then back to Oshawa to install a indoor field ... We are planning to have 2 team so we can work 24/7 to finish fast and then fly to Winnipeg as fast as possible because we have two fields to install over there.

P.S.: Btw, I just paid 1500 Euros for the first payments of the place i'll be staying in next fall in France ! Awsome place :) L'école de commerce où j'étudierais à droite et les estudines europole (mon futur chez nous) dans le fond à gauche !

Ok ! Final exams are almost done and then I'm out of town ...

I'm getting ready for a great summer installing synthetic sports fields around the country. I'll be starting my journey in Oshawa and then flying to Calgary and Winnipeg for some big contracts over there. Last summer was a fun experience as I went to work in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia but I'm staying in Canada this summer. I wont miss eating junk and working with some illegal mexicans I picked-up at the train station ! Also, I won't be working a hundred hours a week without taking any vacations like I did last summer ...  Thanks to Pierre Alarie from Beyond The Turf for the awsome opportunity he gave me ! Working in the turf business is not always easy but its always really rewarding.

I'll be working hard to fill my wallet with lots of dollars before I leave for a year long (might be more) trip in Europe next August. That's pretty much why I started this blog. I'll be studying at Grenoble School of Management (France) for the fall semester and HEC Lausanne (Switzerland) for the spring semester. I'll keep you guys posted with pictures, videos, news and plenty of information about what I'm up to over there. I'll be skiing on the glaciers in Switzerland as I might be a ski coach for a couple of months next winter.

Anyways ! Pictures and news from my summer job around the country and from wherever life brings me will be posted on this blog.
